Halloween can be a confusing time for pets, and Maricopa County animal control has some advice to help pet owners keep them safe and prevent mishaps.
Aprille Hollis, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control spokeswoman, listed several precautions county officials are recommending that pet owners take:
Trick-or-treat candy is not for pets. Chocolate is poisonous to many animals. Tin foil and cellophane can be hazardous if swallowed.
If you have a lit pumpkin, be careful. Your pet could knock it over and cause a fire. Kittens and puppies especially run the risk of getting burned since they are so curious.
Don't leave your pets out in the yard. Sometimes a prank can go overboard or wrong, and you don't want your pet to fall victim.
Don't put your pets in costumes unless you know they like it and are comfortable. It can be stressful for them. If you do put a costume on your pet, make sure its vision isn't obstructed.
Most dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat hours. Too many strangers dressed in costume can be scary to them.
Watch out for the open door. A cat or dog might try to dart out when you are giving out treats and commenting on that cute princess and scary monster.
