Discounts at arts venues near light rail, buses

Taking your kid to see a prehistoric pronghorn is getting more affordable, for a couple of months, at least.
Valley arts patrons can get two-for-one admissions or discounted tickets at 11 venues, courtesy of a special promotion launched Wednesday as a way to boost light-rail ridership and business at local arts centers. Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman are publishing a pocket-sized guide detailing arts venue locations and descriptions and their proximity to light-rail stations and bus stations.
At the Arizona Museum of Natural History in Mesa, for instance, anyone with a light-rail pass can get two admission tickets for the price of one. The offer would be valid for up to four admissions.
Discounted tickets also would be available for the Mesa Arts Center Performing Live show series in November.
There's a bigger point to the guidebook and the discounts, according to Marty McNeil, Metro's marketing manager.
Arts centers and patrons annually account for $82 million in business generated and more than 2,500 jobs in the East Valley, according to a Metro report, which counted Mesa, Chandler and Tempe in the East Valley.
There are 30 arts venues along light rail in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.
