More than 22,000 Mesa Unified School District students are receiving the seasonal flu vaccine through their schools.
The district sent home permission slips to the 67,000 students offering a chance to receive the vaccine during school hours. The vaccines - in both shot and mist form - are being administered by firefighters and school health officials. They were provided free by the Maricopa County Health Department.
Most of the clinics were completed prior to fall break. Classes resumed Monday.
"Just when we were starting to see a rise in the number of flu cases, our kids went on fall break," spokeswoman Kathy Bareiss said. "We're seeing flu in the schools. We can't tell without the test whether its H1N1 or seasonal flu. But we know we have kids with flu-like symptoms. We're not seeing huge amounts, but we know it's there."
