Arizona Fall League begins today

The Arizona Fall League begins today with three games -- Surprise Rafters at Peoria Javelinas (12:35 p.m.), Mesa Solar Sox at Phoenix Desert Dogs (12:35 p.m.) and Peoria Saguaros at Scottsdale Scorpions (6:35 p.m.).

Fall League schedule

The six-team Fall League, which features some of the top minor-league prospects in baseball, plays Monday through Saturday at five spring training sites in the Valley: Mesa Hohokam Stadium, Scottsdale Stadium, Surprise Stadium, Peoria Sports Complex and Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Among the player competing this season are Mike Leake, the former Arizona State pitcher who was chosen eighth overall by the Concinnati Red in the 2009 draft; infielder Ike Davis, another ASU product who graduated from Scottsdale Chaparral High School and is in the New York Mets' farm system; catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, a Scottsdale Horizon High and ASU product now in the Philadelphia Phillies' organization; Stephen Strausburg, the first overall selection in the 2009 draft by the Washington Nationals; and players such as Josh Fields, Ian Kennedy and Adam Loewen who have had stints in the major leagues.

Members of the Diamondbacks organization competing in the Fall League are infielders Brandon Allen and Pedro Ciriaco, ourfielder Cole Gillespie, and pitchers Bryan Augenstein, Chaz Roe, Cesar Valdez and Scott Maine. All play for the Scorpions.
