Pinal County Sheriff's Office reported Friday afternoon that Apache Junction vice mayor R.E. Eck was involved in a road rage incident.
Eck's vehicle collided with a motorcycle from behind, knocking a female passenger to the road, according to deputies.
Eck and the unnamed female were taken to the hospital by helicopter, according to deputies.
Apache Junction police called Sheriff's deputies at 12:05 p.m. to respond to the area of Old West Highway and Idaho Road after the collision between the vehicles, according to police reports.
"The accident was the apparent result of an earlier incident of road rage between vice mayor Eck and the driver of a motorcycle that vice mayor Eck's vehicle struck from behind," according to a statement released by the Sheriff's Office.
According to the statement released by authorities, it appeared that Eck's vehicle struck the rear of a motorcycle causing the passenger to be knocked off onto the roadway.
Following the collision, the driver of the motorcycle reportedly assaulted Eck, according to the statement released by deputies.
Both the motorcycle passenger and Eck were airlifted to a Valley hospital, according to deputies. The names of the motorcycle driver and passenger were not released by authorities. Their current medical conditions were not released Saturday.
No arrests or citations were reported Saturday in connection with the incident. Deputies reported that the investigation is ongoing.
