Arizona State University President Michael Crow is outlining a new vision for the state's largest university that seeks to encourage students to help society meet its "grand challenges."

The new initiative outlined by Crow this week will kick off next month and seeks to encourage students and faculty members to look beyond simple academic disciplines and contemplate society's bigger problems.

Among the seven "grand challenges" Crow wants them to work on are how to defend and extend human rights, promote shared economic prosperity and create a sustainable way of life.

Crow says for students, it will mean that beyond normal university work they'll have the opportunity to partner with faculty to come up with ways to deal with some of the most pressing issues facing society.
