U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona, who represents most of the East Valley, was among just seven Republicans who crossed party lines Tuesday and supported a resolution denouncing Congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s speech to Congress.
Giffords votes 'no' on rebuke resolution“Congressman Wilson is a good man, and I have confidence that his apology to President Obama was sincere, said Flake, in a statement issued after the vote. “However, his actions violated the rules of decorum of the House of Representatives.’’
Flake added,” Despite my suspicion that this resolution was driven as much by partisan politics as upholding precedent, I believe that it’s important to maintain the rules of decorum of the House and I supported its passage.’’
The only other member of Arizona’s delegation to cross party lines was Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat, who represents parts of southern Arizona. She voted with Republicans against the resolution.
Rep. Harry Mitchell, D-Ariz., who also represents parts of the East Valley, voted with most Democrats in favor of the resolution.
Wilson, a South Carolina Republican, shouted, “You lie,’’ at the president during Obama’s speech to Congress last week.
The House voted 240-179 in favor of rebuking Wilson for his actions. There were 233 Democrats joined by the seven Republicans in favor of the resolution, while 167 Republicans were joined by 12 Democrats in voting against it.
