Highland High School in the Gilbert Unified School District collected the most blood donations last school year for the United Blood Services during on-campus blood drives. Basha High School in Chandler and Apache Junction High School also were top collectors.
United Blood Services will honor students at noon Wednesday during the High School Challenge Awards Luncheon at Chase Field in Phoenix.
More than 100 high schools will be presented with awards for their outstanding contributions. The program was established more than 20 years ago to recognize excellence among student blood drive organizers and to inspire Arizona's youth to be lifelong blood donors.
Teenagers were the largest statewide donor group this past year, with 22,879 blood donations. Highland High School gave 805 blood donations last school year.
Highland High was honored before the Arizona Diamondbacks game in May, received a banner and shared a party suite with Prescott Valley Charter School, which had the highest percentage participation. On Wednesday, Highland will receive a plaque and get a free lunch.
