The monsoon season made its return to the Valley Friday night, with heavy rains, high winds and flashes of lightning rolling over many parts of the region.

Power outages were reported in several parts of the Valley, including Mesa and Scottsdale, as the storms rumbled in from the east  between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for much of the evening as the storms moved in.

Arizona Public Service reported about 9,000 customers lost power from the storms, while Salt River Project estimated 5,000  customers were without power, according to a report on ABC15's Web site.

The utilities expected most customers to have power restored by 10:30 p.m. Trees were reported down in several areas of  Mesa as well.

Earlier Friday, the National  Weather Service predicted humidity would be moving back into the state from Mexico Friday evening and through the weekend, reversing a trend of the past week that saw drier weather.

With the change, the chances for seasonal storms bringing rainfall will greatly increase throughout the weekend, while temperatures Saturday and Sunday could stay below 100 degrees because of the humid air.
