The Mercury suspended All-Star guard Diana Taurasi for two games for "conduct detrimental to the team," in the wake of a July 2 citation in which she was charged with extreme DUI and speeding.
Taurasi will miss Saturday's game against Detroit and next Wednesday's game against Minnesota. The Mercury are 11-4 and in first place in the Western Conference.
Taurasi leads the WNBA in scoring at 20.7 points per game and is currently third among Western Conference guards in All-Star voting. She will continue to practice with the team during her suspension.
The 27-year-old guard was cited hours after she scored 22 points in the Mercury's 93-81 victory over the Seattle Storm. Taurasi pleaded not guilty to the DUI charges and not responsible to the speeding citation. She currently has a court date scheduled for July 22.
Taurasi released a statement through the team expressing her remorse over the situation and briefly spoke with the media after Thursday's practice.
A few minutes later, the WNBA released a statement on its Web site: "The WNBA supports the actions taken today by the Mercury and we don't believe further action by the league will be necessary."
