A 20-year-old man who discovered a handgun in a closet of a Queen Creek-area home on Monday died after he pointed it at his head and shot it when he doubted it was loaded, authorities said.
The man, who lived at the residence, was going through the closet of a master bedroom with a teenage boy about 12:30 p.m. when they found a small semi-automatic handgun, according to Lt. Tamatha Villar, spokeswoman for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
The boy told the man he'd better be careful with the gun because it was loaded. The man doubted him, and put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, Villar said.
The home is in the 5000 block of Preakness Drive, near Schnepf Road and Skyline Drive.
The name of the man has not been released, pending notification of relatives, Villar said.
A woman and two young children also were in the Queen Creek-area home when the gun went off, and deputies from the Pinal County Sheriff's Office are investigating the shooting, Villar said.
