East Valley briefs: Suns, Mercury to host camp in Phoenix

Suns coach Alvin Gentry and forward Louis Amundson will be on hand at the start of the Suns’ annual summer youth basketball camp in Phoenix today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Thunderbird High School, 1750 W. Thunderbird Rd.
Gentry and Amundson will offer their basketball knowledge to the more than 280 kids in attendance as well as sign autographs.
Other Suns and Mercury players and staff members will also assist at the camp, which runs Sunday through Thursday.
Suns basketball camps offer one-on-one basketball instruction for kids of all skill levels between seven and 18 years of age. Camps focus on the importance of sportsmanship, fundamental skill development, teamwork and a positive attitude.

TRACK AND FIELD
Two competitors with ties to the Arizona State track and field program won the shot put national titles in the junior division at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday in Eugene, Ore.
Incoming freshman Anna Jelmini led the ASU contingent with her win in the women’s junior division, as her toss of 16.15 meters claimed the crown by over three feet. ASU completed the sweep of the junior division shot put when Jordan Clarke, who redshirted as a freshman this past season, won with a meet-record toss of 20.46 meters.
In the women’s senior shot put, Jessica Pressley and Sarah Stevens finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Pressley recorded a best toss of 17.81 meters while Stevens, the 2009 Pac-10 Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, threw 17.69 meters.
ASU’s Cara Carpenter finished fourth overall in the women’s pole vault and Ryan Whiting took 18th in the discus.
