TUCSON — Nearly 549 military positions and 28 F-16 fighter jets at Luke Air Force Base in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale will be cut under the Air Force's proposed fiscal 2010 force structure realignment.

The cuts were announced Friday under realignment plans that also will slash 588 military personnel slots and 48 F-15 jets at Luke's sister fighter jet training site, Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla.

The cuts are part of the fiscal 2010 Fighter Force Reduction Plan.

Those planes are being replaced by the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson is scheduled to add 164 military and 10 civilian positions but lose six A-10s.

Luke, the world's largest F-16 training base, will end up with 96 F-16s.
