A dozen Chandler police officers will be among those climbing the state's highest point, Humphrey's Peak, on Saturday to honor a Department of Public Safety officer who was killed while rescuing two hikers last year.
The Chandler Police Department is coordinating the local "Cops on Top" hiking expedition to the top of the 12,633-foot peak, near Flagstaff, and is fielding the largest contingent on the team of 44 volunteers from 12 law enforcement agencies across the state.
Livi Kacic, a Chandler police officer, said she became involved in the program in 2006 to honor a close friend, Rob Targosz, a Gilbert motorcycle officer who was killed by a drunken driver.
The hike, about nine miles round trip, takes at least four or five hours, she said.
"It's moderate to difficult," Kacic said.
This year's hike is meant to honor Bruce Harrolle, a 36-year-old DPS officer from Mesa. Harrolle, a medic, was killed last October while rescuing two stranded hikers in the Bell Rock area near Sedona. Although the two hikers were rescued successfully, Harrolle died after being struck by his helicopter's spinning rotor blades.
The "Cops on Top" program calls on public safety officers in each of the 50 states to scale the highest point in their respective states on the same day. The effort is meant to honor an officer in each state who died in the line of duty.
