Catholic Social Service in Tucson is seeking donations to help two refugee families that lost family members in a van rollover on Interstate 10 last week.

Seventeen people were in the van, which rolled on Wednesday afternoon. Four women and one man died at the scene. A fifth woman died at University Medical Center last week.

Five refugees remained at UMC on Monday, two of them in critical condition and three in fair condition.

Those in the van were all refugees from Africa who had been traveling for job interviews in Willcox when the accident occurred.

Catholic Social Service is asking for help for a family of 10 that lost its 19-year-old daughter. Her mother and 21-year-old brother still are in the hospital recovering from injuries they sustained in the accident. The family is made up of six other children, all under age 18, and the father.

The other family needing help is that of a Burundian father who died at the crash scene, leaving behind a wife, adult daughter and 3-year-old granddaughter.

Donations will be used to help pay for funeral expenses and ongoing financial assistance that will be needed by the families.

Contributions can be mailed to: Catholic Social Service Refugee Memorial/Aid Fund, 140 W. Speedway, Suite 230, Tucson, AZ 85705.

Online donations will be accepted at www.ccs-soaz.org Select "Donate now," then select the Catholic Social Service Fund and note Refugee Memorial/Aid in the comments section.
