Looking for a husband? Try Graham County
Women: Want to increase your odds of getting a boyfriend? Or a husband?
The U.S. Census Bureau can help.
New figures Wednesday show that, at least as of last July, the ratio of men to women in Arizona was the highest in Graham County. Put another way, for every 10 women between the ages of 20 and 30, there were 13 men.
Whether that's still true today is unclear, as recent layoffs in the mining industry likely have resulted in some men packing up to look for work elsewhere. But there are other better-than-average places to be a 20-ish woman looking for the best odds of love - or at least companionship - including Cochise, Pinal and Greenlee counties.
So where's the best place, from a pure numbers standpoint, to be a man in that same age group?
Well, truth be told, there are no great spots. But at least in Santa Cruz County the number of women in that age group, unlike the rest of the state, is slightly higher than the number of men.
But there's one bit of good news for men: If you can hang in there long enough, the odds do get better pretty much everywhere. That's not surprising as women, on average, tend to live longer than men.
The best spot for a man 65 and older is in Pima County, where every 10 men have 13 women from which to choose.
Women of that age would find the odds the best in La Paz County, where the ratio is close to one-to-one.
La Paz also logs in as the state's oldest county, with more than a third of its population 65 and older. In fact, that figure is the highest in the country, followed by Highlands County in Florida at 32 percent and Lancaster in Virginia also close to that figure.
On the other extreme, Coconino County has the smallest percentage of those of retirement age at just 8.3 percent. Nationwide, Chattahoochee, Ga. was the "youngest" with just 3 percent of its population 65 and older.
