The dispute between Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes and the National Hockey League is headed to court.
The NHL is expected to ask a U.S. Bankrupty Court judge Thursday to dismiss the Chapter 11 filing by the Coyotes. The motion will be heard at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in downtown Phoenix.
If the bankrupty judge rules that the NHL's takeover of the team late Wednesday was legal, it could block Moyes' attempt to sell the team to Canadian billionaire Jim Basillie and allow NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to try to broker a deal to keep the team in Glendale.
Meanwhile, city manager Ed Beasley said Wednesday that the city will fight to keep the Coyotes.
"The city has rights and we're going to protect those rights," he said. "We're going to vigorously defend our position that we’ve taken all along, that this team is going to stay in the city of Glendale and the state of Arizona."
There's been considerable speculation that Glendale would offer financial concession to an ownership group willing to keep the Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena. But that's not necessarily the case, Beasley said.
"The city of Glendale has never stated it was going to make concessions," Beasley said, adding that any negotiations with new owners would have to be "mutually beneficial to both parties."
