The cost of an Arizona State University education is rocketing $1,100 for thousands of students, equaling the largest tuition and fee increase in state history.
The Arizona Board of Regents had already increased tuition for next school year once, in December, by $600 for ASU’s in-state undergraduate freshmen and transfer students, and $280 for continuing students.
On Thursday, the regents added a temporary tuition surcharge intended to make up a share of what ASU has lost in state budget cuts. Arizona residents must pay an extra $510 a year; out-of-state students’ surcharge is $710.
The board voted 5-2 in favor of the new student costs, with Regent Ernest Calderon and Student Regent David Martinez III opposing the surcharge, according to the Tucson Citizen.
ASU will bill new in-state students roughly $6,700 a year just to enroll in classes starting next fall. Those costs totaled less than $5,000 just two years ago.
