Arizona State women’s basketball coach Charli Turner Thorne will serve as head coach of the 2009 USA Basketball Women’s World University Games Team.
The selections were made by USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team committee. Her assistants will be Michigan State coach Suzy Merchant and Pepperdine's Julie Rousseau.
The games will take place for the first two weeks of July in Belgrade, Serbia. Players selected for the team must have NCAA eligibility remaining. Tryouts are in mid-May in Colorado Springs.
Turner Thorne owns a 291-194 record (.600) in her 13 seasons at Arizona State. She's led the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament seven times in the past nine years, including five consecutive.
This season, the Sun Devils went 26-9 and reached the Elite Eight for the second time in the past three seasons, despite losing starting point guard Dymond Simon to a season-ending knee injury late in the regular season.
Turner Thorne joined former Washington coach Chris Gobrecht and current Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer as the only women's basketball coaches in Pac-10 history to have led their respective schools to at least five consecutive 20-win seasons.
