The Tribune will adjust the free distribution strategy it began in January by eliminating its print edition on Saturdays beginning the week of May 15, Publisher Julie Moreno announced Tuesday.

The paper will continue publishing print editions Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler and Queen Creek.

The decision to eliminate Saturday editions was the result of the ongoing sluggish economy, which has resulted in fewer automotive and real estate advertisements, which traditionally have bolstered Saturdays, Moreno said.

"At the onset, we knew that we needed to be willing to assess the strategy and make adjustments along the way," she said. "Now that we have some experience with our new model, we have begun the process of looking at what is working well, and what elements should be adjusted. As a result, we will eliminate print distribution on Saturday, and maintain a print presence on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in the markets we serve."

The newspaper will also adjust its Chandler editions during the same week. The Ocotillo Tribune, which currently is distributed weekly each Friday, will be combined with the Chandler Tribune, Moreno said. The Tribune will also increase distribution in Chandler by 10,000 copies to 25,000, to more effectively serve the market.

The paper will continue to update its Web site, www.evtrib.com, with news and information seven days a week.

Eliminating the Saturday print edition will result in 13 layoffs, mostly employees who work in production-related functions.

The paper will continue to be offered for free in select distribution areas and in racks throughout the four communities.

The paper also announced Tuesday it will implement a program for readers and advertisers willing to pay for delivery of the print editions. The program will be offered in select areas, starting in Mesa. No price has been determined.
