Arizona State University wants a second tuition increase for next school year to recoup some of the millions of dollars that it expects to lose in future budget cuts.

In a proposal released Friday afternoon, ASU President Michael Crow asks that students pay a $600 surcharge per semester on top of their existing tuition and fees. Those rates had already increased 10 percent for new students and 5 percent for continuing students.

Crow did not immediately return calls for comment Friday.

The Arizona Board of Regents will consider the surcharge proposal at their meeting April 30 in Tucson. If approved, ASU freshmen and transfer students would pay $6,847 next year - $1,200 more than students paid this year.

Since August, lawmakers have cut $88 million from ASU's funding as they work to eliminate multiple billion-dollar deficits.

Regent Fred DuVal said students will likely have to cover more of the cost of their education in the future to prevent Arizona's public universities from damaging educational quality.

"We have cut first, we have cut second, we have cut third," DuVal said. "And now what we're looking to do is draw the balance."
