Gilbert police arrested a Chandler man Wednesday who they say robbed prospective car buyers at knifepoint after luring them with advertisements on Craigslist.
The arrest of David V. La, 35, came after a five-mile chase that ended when La lost control of his car and collided with a tree at Val Vista Drive and Boston Street, according to Sgt. Mark Marino, Gilbert police spokesman.
La was booked into jail in connection with two robberies and two attempted robberies. Investigators are still building a case against La on a robbery in Phoenix.
Marino said La “has obtained over $15,000 in the last three weeks.”
On Wednesday, investigators answered an ad on the free online classified ad service.
When La arrived, he matched the description of the robber in the previous crimes and his car was the same make and model as in the other robberies.
He asked the undercover detective to get into the car to take a test drive. La fled when the detective tried to stall him while the arrest team got in place.
Marino said evidence from the previous robberies were found in the car and investigators served a search warrant at a Chandler location.
