An Apache Junction High School girls basketball coach was arrested on suspicion of sexual conduct with a minor and attempted luring of a minor for sexual exploitation involving one of the players on the team, according to the Apache Junction Police Department.

Jason Beck, 24, a junior varsity girls coach, was arrested on Feb. 3 after allegations surfaced of sexually related behavior with a female player, during a joint investigation between the Apache Junction Unified School District and police, according to a school spokeswoman.

The investigation found that Beck sent personal text messages to a 17-year-old girl, which led to the alleged inappropriate relationship, and that some of the conversations were sexually charged, police said.

Beck is being held in the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on $25,000 bond.

A part-time coaching employee at the school, Beck was hired in late October and resigned from his coaching job on Jan. 13, after the allegations of improper behavior surfaced, according to Carol Shepherd, spokeswoman for the school district.

“When improper behavior was alleged, we immediately called the police,” Shepherd said. “Mr. Beck subsequently resigned. We followed all of the appropriate approved hiring practices that included fingerprinting and a criminal background check in accordance with school policy and state law.”
