FLAGSTAFF – Snow began to taper off early Tuesday as a winter storm moved eastward, but another one could be on its heels.
The National Weather Service said the weather will be unsettled and cold from Thursday through Monday, with the possibility of another strong winter storm arriving Sunday.
The latest storm, which moved into Arizona on Monday, had dumped 15 inches of snow in Flagstaff, 6 to 10 inches at Window Rock, 5 to 10 inches in Prescott, 6 inches in Payson and 4 inches at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.
Another 1 to 2 inches of snow was expected Tuesday in areas above 6,500 feet and a trace amount was expected across the Navajo Nation.
Dan Leblanc, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, said Monday’s storm was the single strongest winter storm this season. Several major roads were closed, including sections of Interstate 40, and numerous slide-offs, accidents and injuries were reported.
Roads that remained closed Tuesday afternoon were: U.S. 180, U.S 66 between Peach Springs and Seligman, state Route 260 just outside of Payson, and state Route 77 between Globe and Kearney-Winkleman.
Elsewhere, much of the snow was turning into slush, and state Department of Transportation crews were busy trying to prevent it from turning into ice. The state Department of Public Safety was urging motorists to use extreme caution while traveling.
