INTERACTIVE: Live Inauguration coverage

For several dozen youth from the East Valley, it will be a memory enfolded in the bitter cold of a Washington winter. They will be there, outside near the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

Boy Scouts and other students from several East Valley schools will all be in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. Among those traveling to the nation's capital are Hamilton High School in the Chandler Unified School District, and several high schools and junior high schools in the Mesa Unified School District.

Hamilton alone is taking 52 people, including more than 40 students. There was a gathering Tuesday night for parents and students to get last-minute travel information.

"This is going to be a great trip," said Patrick Whorton, the Hamilton teacher who organized the tour through Smithsonian Student Travel.

The students will visit Smithsonian museums, Mount Vernon and the Library of Congress. They will attend a student inaugural ball. And they'll view the inauguration on jumbo-size televisions on the Mall.

"I love history so I'm probably most excited to be visiting the places where so much history was made," said Meghan L.C. Morris, a Hamilton student. "I'm thrilled."

A group of about 25 Boy Scouts and chaperones of Boy Scout Troop No. 804 boarded church vans Friday to travel to Washington. They received inauguration tickets from Sen. Jon Kyl, said the Rev. Terry Marks of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church. The group will stay at a military base and a YMCA along the way.

"As we travel, we've put together resources as best we can. The community has come to support us," he said. "If anyone can help assist us, we would appreciate it."

The boys are from Chandler, Gilbert, Maricopa, Tempe and Phoenix, Marks said.

The Tribune hopes to post photos, thoughts and descriptions from several students on our web site next week.
