The new Higley Unified School District governing board will meet for the first time Tuesday in a special board workshop, the group’s first meeting since Denise Birdwell was appointed interim superintendent.

Higley district OKs superintendent's release

It’s a chance for new board members Greg Land and Paul Howell to get updated on district issues and talk about some issues parents have been concerned about. The two will join re-elected board member Denise Standage, clerk Venessa Whitener and member Kim Anderson.

Land said he doesn’t expect former superintendent Joyce Lutrey to be at the meeting. Lutrey’s early release from her contract was accepted at last month’s board meeting.

On Tuesday, the Higley board is expected to discuss communication between the community, staff and the media, creating a “respectful environment,” and “dealing with conflict.”

Land said he’s looking forward to getting “open transparency” within the district and to “build trust” throughout the community, something he felt was lacking while Lutrey was on board.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Land said. “It’s been a long haul. I’m excited to get started, finally.”

The board workshop will be 6 p.m. at the district office, 2935 S. Recker Road, Gilbert.

The Higley board will also meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for a regular board meeting.

The board is expected to discuss district finances, a new boundary proposal for Centennial Elementary School, and how the district will begin searching for a new superintendent.
