Mesa police are investigating a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that left a man dead early New Year’s Day.

Witnesses said the 22-year-old Hispanic man was walking around 2:30 a.m. in the middle of a stretch of road near Center Street and University Drive with his arms outstretched when he was struck from behind by a van traveling east, police reported.

After hitting the man, the van slowed and then turned north, witnesses told police.

The vehicle was described as a red or maroon Dodge Caravan or similar type van with tinted windows.

The victim was transported to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix where he died at 4:10 a.m.

His next of kin has not been notified.
