A family from Maricopa welcomed a son into the world just 15 seconds after the stroke of midnight Thursday.
Several calls to area hospitals revealed that Conner Garza was the first East Valley baby born in 2009. He was delivered at Chandler Regional Medical Center and weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces.
He is the fourth child for Jerry Garza and Elaine Modena of Maricopa. Their older children are ages 4 to 9. Conner was due Dec. 29, making a late appearance Thursday. "They were very excited to bring the new year in on a positive sign of hope," said Danielle LeBlanc, spokeswoman for Chandler Regional Medical Center.
The hospital honored them with a basket of baby goodies.
Just a short time after Conner's arrival, Rylan Saiz was born at Mesa's Banner Baywood Medical Center at 28 seconds after midnight. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. His parents are John Saiz and Christy Morrison of Mesa.
Both boys were natural births, hospital staff said.
