Stoops to get 3-year extension
Arizona football coach Mike Stoops will likely receive the contract extension he wanted.
UA athletic director Jim Livengood announced Tuesday his intention to extend Stoops' contract through the 2013 season.
The three-year extension is subject to approval by the Arizona Board of Regents, Livengood said. The extension would be the second since Stoops arrived in 2003. Stoops is currently signed through the 2010 season.
"We're very pleased with the progress of Arizona football under Mike's direction," Livengood said in a news release. "His personal growth as a coach has been outstanding, and we're glad to continue moving forward with him as the steward for Arizona football."
Livengood said the details of the contract, including the possibility of a raise, will be worked out later. Stoops currently makes about $650,000 a year, plus incentives.
"I'm very excited about the extension," Stoops said. "The administration always has shown a commitment to what we're doing, and this bolsters that support. ...
"I'm happy to be here in Tucson for a long time as head coach of our Wildcats. This is where my family wants to be."
The Wildcats finished 8-5 this season and defeated BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 20.
It was UA's best mark since 1998.
