An armed man attempting to rob a Chandler jewelry store Saturday died of a gunshot wound resulting from a gun battle between the robber and store workers, police said.

The store owner was shot in the face during the gun battle, but he is expected to survive, said Chandler police Detective David Ramer.

Police have not released the identities of anyone involved in the shootings.

Two men entered the Christopher Diamond Jewelry store, located near the intersection of Chandler Boulevard and Loop 101, at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, Ramer said.

One of the men was armed and told the store owner, his wife and their adult son that he was going to rob the store.

When the store owner pulled a gun, the robber shot him, Ramer said.

A resulting gun battle left the robber fatally wounded, but he was able to flee in a stolen pickup truck to the area of Broadway Road and Loop 101.

The robbers’ vehicle came to a stop near the intersection and the second robber fled on foot while the wounded robber remained inside the

truck.

The wounded man was transported to an area hospital where he later died, Ramer said.

The second robber was later arrested in the surrounding area, Ramer said.

No one else was injured during the shootings, and witnesses helped police track the robbers’ vehicle by providing a description of the truck, Ramer said.
