The Associated Press

Quarterback Rudy Carpenter was named offensive player of the year, and linebacker Mike Nixon and safety Troy Nolan shared top defensive player honors as Arizona State held its football awards banquet on Sunday night at The Phoenician resort in Scottsdale.

Carpenter, a senior who finished his ASU career with 43 straight starts, completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 2,493 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

Nixon, a junior, led the Sun Devils with 90 tackles and led the Pac-10 with five interceptions. Nolan, a senior, had 64 tackles and four interceptions and scored three touchdowns.

Other winners included linebacker Anthony Reyes (top special-teams player), guard Paul Fanaika (top offensive lineman), defensive end Dexter Davis (top defensive lineman), defensive tackle Lawrence Guy (top freshman), tight end Andrew Pettes (most improved offensive player) and defensive end Luis Vasquez (most improved on defense).

RECRUITING

ASU has received two more commitments, according to recruiting services, bringing the number of known commitments to 12.

Peoria running back Jamal Miles, at 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, is rated as the top running back prospect in Arizona. He rushed for 2,168 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Panthers this season.

Miles — whose running style has been compared with Keegan Herring, who starred at Peoria before playing at ASU — is the eighth player committed from the state of Arizona.

On Sunday, cornerback LeQuan Lewis of Cerritos (Calif.) College committed to ASU. He is expected to enroll for the spring semester.

BATEMAN IN

Wide receiver Kemonte Bateman, a 2008 ASU signee who grayshirted this year, achieved the necessary qualifying score on the ACT and will report to ASU in January.

Bateman was ranked among the top 100 players in the country as a senior at Crenshaw High in Los Angeles.

His eligibility clock will not start ticking until 2009.
