ELOY - A stolen truck carrying suspected illegal immigrants crashed Sunday morning in Eloy, killing two and injuring 11 others.
The extent of the other people's injuries is unclear, but three medical helicopter dispatched more serious patients to local hospitals.
Survivors of the crash told officers the truck's driver was going about 50 mph in the desert when the vehicle rolled. They were not being chased, Pinal County sheriff's spokesman Michael Minter said.
"They said they were just going along one minute and the next minute, boom, they rolled over," Minter said. "Fortunately more of them weren't killed."
The driver, also the suspected smuggler of the group, fled the scene on foot and hasn't been found.
Minter said it's common for smugglers to transport their human cargo in vehicles from the border and stay off of major roads until they can get to Interstate 10 closer to the Phoenix area.
It was unclear where the immigrants were from. They will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
