Arizona State freshman basketball player Johnny Coy has decided to leave the school to be with his father, who is suffering from an illness, according to a team spokesman.
Coy, a native of St. Joseph, Mo., was also a seventh-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Phillies last summer. He bypassed signing with the Phillies to play at ASU, where he was expected to play basketball and baseball.
Instead, the 6-foot-7 guard and outfielder will transfer to an undetermined school closer to home following final exams next week.
“The coaches and everyone at ASU have done all they can to help me, and I am thankful for that,” Coy said in a statement released by the team.
“At this time, it is best for me to be closer to my family.”
The Sun Devils basketball team was planning on redshirting Coy this season. He averaged 27 points as a senior at Benton High School.
