LAS VEGAS - The Diamondbacks signed Augie Ojeda to a one-year contract Wednesday, a move that could give them one side of their second-base platoon.
D-Backs, infielder Lopez agree on deal
“I’m definitely excited,” Ojeda said. “I’m ready to get back to work.”
Ojeda’s deal is believed to be worth about $700,000.
He had a career offensive year in 2008, hitting .242 with a career-high nine doubles, 17 RBIs, 26 walks in 231 at-bats while filling in for Orlando Hudson.
Ojeda said his role was not discussed.
"I’m up for anything. I'm a team guy. Wherever ‘Bo Mel’ (manager Bob Melvin) needs me,” he said.
A switch-hitter, Ojeda showed most of his productivity from the left side in 2008, driving in 15 runs with eight extra-base hits.
His batting average was a little higher from the right side, however, when he hit .250 against .240 the other way.
“Overall, it was a pretty good year,” Ojeda said.
“It would have meant more to make the playoffs. That’s what I want.”
