Arizona State will have to adjust a running back plan that has — with the exception of last week’s game against UCLA — worked well in recent contests if starter Shaun DeWitty is unable to play against Arizona on Saturday due to nagging back pain.

DeWitty, who at 6-foot-2, 227 pounds is the Sun Devils’ biggest scholarship back, has started since the Oregon State game on Nov. 1.
The junior rushed for 110 yards that night and has served as the early-game power back, giving way to Keegan Herring or Dimitri Nance when ASU wants a change of pace.
Herring, a senior, would start if DeWitty — who has had back problems for much of his career — is unable to play.
Nance (5-10, 218), who has recovered from an early-season hand injury, would serve as the power back.
“We would go with Dimitri as our big guy,” coach Dennis Erickson said.
“That’s how we began the year, really, and Dimitri is healthy now.”
In other injury news, defensive tackle David Smith (stinger) will play on Saturday if he has enough strength, Erickson said.
Safety Clint Floyd (kidney), who returned last week after missing four games, responded well and is ready for Arizona.
However, linebacker Colin Parker (knee) is questionable.
FINAL THOUGHT
Wednesday’s post-practice session was Erickson’s last media availability before the Arizona game.
On his team’s preparation, he said: “We’ve practiced good. We’d better. It’s been a good week with the motivation and everything we are trying to get done.
“This is the game, so you practice hard and prepare physically and mentally and let it fly. It seems like it takes forever to get to this game.”
The last day this week that ASU players could speak to the media was Tuesday.
