What to see this week
1. “Milk”: Once again, past is prologue. Invigorating civil rights drama hits theaters in the wake of Props 8, 102, et al.
2. “Slumdog Millionaire”: Filmed in Mumbai, the bustling, terrorist-ravaged Indian metropolis of current note.
3. “Synecdoche, New York”: A film both mind-bogglingly grand and intimate. Philip Seymour Hoffman amazes.
4. “Quantum of Solace”: I wonder if Daniel Craig 'roided up to play Bond? That might explain 007’s strangely diminished libido.
5. “Bolt”: Still your best bet for wholesome family fun.
What not to see this week
1. “Punisher: War Zone”: Love the exploding heads, but that insanely stilted dialogue has to go.
2. “Four Christmases”: Insipid comedy “moments” shoehorned into a barely plausible premise. The nation’s No. 1 movie!
3. “Twilight”: Does for the vampire genre what, say, Dane Cook did for stand-up comedy.
4. “Nobel Son”: Alan Rickman, Danny DeVito, Mary Steenburgen … if this was 1989, I’d be stoked.
5. “Australia”: Hugh Jackman battles gay rumors with stubble, bar brawls and one authentic-looking kissing scene with Nicole Kidman.
