East Valley briefs: Southwest Section win Goldwater Cup

Blayne Hobbs and Dean Vomacka of the Southwest Section PGA edged Rob McIver and Michael Wog to win the 48th annual Goldwater Cup Matches on Tuesday at Mesa Country Club.
Hobbs beat McIver 2 up on the 18th hole to tie the match at 11.5 . Vomacka then beat Wog three to one to set the final margin at 12.5 to 11.5.
The Southwest Section professionals are riding a 25-year winning streak and lead the overall series 35-13 in the regular division. They also won the senior division 13.5 to 4.5 and lead that series 22-10-3.
Scott Frisch, Ben Kreger, Jason Magee, Glen Griffith also won matches for the Southwest Section.
Amateur Erik Nielson of Tucson and Pat Geare helped the Arizona Golf Association jump out to a 5-1 lead . But the Southwest Section rebounded by beating the amateurs 4.5 to 1.5 . The pros trailed by one point heading into singles play.
The event is named for the late Bob Goldwater Sr., a former state amateur champion .
WNBA DISPERSAL DRAFT
• The Phoenix Mercury will select fifth in a WNBA dispersal draft on Monday following the news that the Houston Comets will suspend operations, the league said.
The WNBA will begin its 12th season in 2009 with 13 teams. The league just signed a eight-year television agreement with ESPN.
Comets players, with the exception of unrestricted free agents Latasha Byears, Mwadi Mabika, Hamchetou Maiga-Ba, Michelle Snow and Tina Thompson, may be selected in the dispersal draft. Atlanta will pick first followed by Washington, Chicago, Minnesota, Phoenix, Indiana, Sacramento, New York, Los Angeles, Connecticut, Detroit, Seattle, San Antonio.
