Gilbert emergency workers responded to a serious auto collision involving 10 people Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.
Gilbert, Queen Creek and Mesa firefighters along with Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office deputies responded to the collision about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Power and Germann roads, said Gilbert fire Battalion Chief Josh Ehrman.
“It was upgraded to a first alarm medical due to the number of patients,” Ehrman said. He said the intersection was shut down for hours around the collision. Two patients with serious injuries were flown by helicopter to Valley hospitals, four were taken by ambulance, and four other injured persons at the scene refused medical treatment or to be taken to a hospital.
Of the two seriously injured patients, Ehrman said, “They were stable at the time of transport to the hospital.”
The number of vehicles involved in the collision was not released late Saturday, and no names were released by authorities. MCSO was investigating the incident.
Ehrman said authorities at the scene had not yet determined how the collision happened, and that the roads at the intersection were expected to be re-opened by 7:30 p.m.
Ehrman said there was an accident involving an emergency worker Friday night, but as of 6:30 p.m. Saturday night there were no other collisions or emergency reports to mention in Gilbert.
“But it is also only early Saturday night,” he said of the relatively quiet Thanksgiving weekend. “It’s good because people are spending time with their friends and families.”
