It’s official. In a special meeting Monday, the Scottsdale City Council voted to approve the results of the Nov. 4 election, despite the absence of Councilwoman Betty Drake, who was not re-elected.
Without discussion, the council voted 6-0 to approve Maricopa County’s election tally, which showed single-term Councilman Jim Lane defeating incumbent Mary Manross for the mayoralty by 590 votes. Manross has been mayor for eight years, and has served on the City Council since 1992.
Because of the narrow margin, Manross conceded to Lane two weeks after the election, on Nov. 19.
The election also returned incumbent Ron McCullagh to the City Council. McCullagh was the highest vote-getter among the six candidates for three seats on the council. Newcomers Lisa Borowsky and Suzanne Klapp will be joining the council, as well, when the new members are sworn in on Jan. 13, said Carolyn Jagger, City Clerk.
While Councilman Tony Nelssen participated in the meeting via telephone, Drake, who finished 1,092 votes behind Klapp, did not attend. Calls to Drake went unreturned Monday.
Of the remaining two candidates for council, Tom Giller finished 7,378 votes behind Drake, while Nan Nesvig finished 11,117 behind her.
Turnout of registered voters in the election topped 86 percent, with more than 116,000 ballots cast, according to the City Clerk’s Office.
