JUCO notebook: CGCC women’s soccer reaches semifinals

Chandler-Gilbert Community College’s women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2008 NJCAA Division I championship in Chandler with a 2-1 win over Schoolcraft College of Michigan on Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Coyotes’ Angie Grode (Chandler Basha) and Kayla Poe (Mesa Dobson) scored against fourth-seeded Schoolcraft.
CGCC (20-1-1) will play top seed Darton (Ga.) College (22-0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at CGCC.
In other games: Lewis and Clark College defeated Monroe Community College 4-1, while Northern Idaho defeated Navarro Community College 3-2.
SCC VOLLEYBALL FALLS
Scottsdale Community College’s women’s volleyball team was swept in a quarterfinal match 23-25, 21-25, 23-25 to third seed Johnson County (Kan.) Community College in the NJCAA national championships in Wisconsin.
The sixth-seeded Artichokes — who won in the opening round 20-25, 25-13, 25-19, 22-25, 17-15 over No. 11 seed McHenry (Ill.) Community College — will attempt to get into the seventh-place consolation match when they play Cowley Community College, which was upset by Illinois Central College in the quarterfinals.
MANNIX RECEIVES HONOR
SCC coach Regina Mannix has been selected to the NJCAA Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Mannix, in her 15th season as head coach, has the highest winning percentage (over .700) and total number of wins (424-151) of all NJCAA and NCAA coaches in Arizona.
This year’s team went 28-7 in the regular season.
Among Mannix’s accomplishments: Arizona Community College Athletic Conference coach of the year in 2001, 2003 and 2006; American Volleyball Coaches Association Southwest coach of the year, 2003 and 2005; and 48 of her players selected all-conference in the ACCAC, with 16 All-Region 1 picks and three players of the year, including this year with Haylee Thompson. The team finished was a Division II national runner-up in 2003 .
E.V. TEAMS START STRONG
Mesa Community College’s women’s basketball team, ranked sixth in NJCAA Division II, has started the season 5-0, including an 89-55 win over Eastern Arizona on Wednesday. The team had two wins (85-62 over Owens College and 84-53 over Phoenix College) in the Arizona Western College Classic last weekend.
MCC’s men’s team is 3-0, after a 73-71 win over Eastern Arizona on Wednesday.
CGCC’s men’s team is 3-0 after a 90-82 win over SCC (2-1) Wednesday.
