Arizona State football coaches got a brief glimpse into the future Wednesday when the scout team finished practice with a spirited scrimmage.
The emotion was high on both sides, with the first-and-second team players rooting on their offensive and defensive brethren.
“We won,” coach Dennis Erickson deadpanned. “Can you put that on the record? Between that and the spring games, I’m in good shape.”
Erickson didn’t put much stock into evaluating the action.
He said it’s just a good time to have some fun during the bye week.
The Sun Devils play UCLA on Nov. 28.
“You get tired of running other people’s plays and getting hit all the time,” Erickson said.
“Now they’ve got a chance to run our own stuff and have some fun playing the game.”
The scout team normally wears the jersey numbers of ASU’s next opponents, and runs schemes the Sun Devils expect to see during the game.
INJURY UPDATE
Cornerback Gerald Flunder suffered an apparent broken leg in the scrimmage.
Defensive tackle David Smith (stinger) is questionable for the game against the Bruins.
“I’d be surprised if he played next week,” Erickson said.
Linebacker Colin Parker injured his knee in practice Tuesday and did not participate Wednesday.
Parker tore his anterior cruciate ligament as a junior in high school and has had problems in both knees since.
Erickson said it was mostly precautionary, and he will likely be able to play against UCLA.
