A Gilbert police officer who failed to go out to the scene after a resident reported finding personal financial documents inside a ransacked model home will receive further training on how to handle such cases, a Gilbert Police Department spokesman said.
Lt. Eric Shuhandler said Tuesday that Julio Gonzales, a resident of the Higley Park neighborhood at Higley and Ray roads, came to the police department lobby Friday morning to report finding the paperwork with sensitive financial information.
Gilbert police officer Larry Sinks did not take a report and did not send anyone out to the scene to investigate or collect the forms, Shuhandler said.
"Obviously, that's something that should have been done for the public's safety," Shuhandler said.
Sinks will receive further training but will not face any disciplinary actions, he added. Gonzales disposed of the paperwork on his own.
