It’s not a matter of if. It’s when.
The Cardinals are on the verge of winning their first division title since capturing the NFC East in 1975.
On Sunday, the Cardinals (7-3) can clinch the NFC West if three things happen: they defeat the Giants, the 49ers (3-7) lose at Dallas and the Seahawks (2-8) lose or tie at home against Washington.
“I’m very excited,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “There’s been a lot of hard work that’s gone into this.
“People say the division is down. You can say all that you want. (But) we’ve played pretty good football against some good teams.”
The Cardinals’ concern now is to drive to the highest possible playoff seed rather than coast to the title.
“It’s obviously new territory for us to be in this position,” Whisenhunt said. “Our approach is no matter what happens, we’re going to play hard.”
He noted the Giants last year were propelled by the need just to make the playoffs, as was the Pittsburgh title team when he was an assistant coach there.
The Cardinals probably won’t have that motivation.
“Hopefully, we’re fighting for a higher seed,” Whisenhunt said. “That’s a good problem to have.”
