Mesa police are investigating an overnight shooting in downtown Mesa that left one person dead and another in critical condition.

Police believe the 2:30 a.m. incident started outside Club Cabo on Robson, near a Subway restaurant at Main and Robson.

A patrol officer heard gun shots in the area and came across a crowd gathered outside the club, located at 30 S. Robson.

After hearing more gun shots near Sirrine and 1st Avenue, officers responding to the incident found five people inside a 1999 Chevy truck parked on the street. A passenger in the front seat was dead from gunshot wounds. The driver was taken to Scottsdale Osborn hospital and is in “extremely critical” condition, according to Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Ed Wessing. The truck appeared to have been hit by multiple bullets.

Police found shell casings on the road where the Chevy was parked.

The other three passengers, two of whom are juveniles, were unharmed. Police are interrogating the three to get more information. Their identities are not being released at this point.

There are no eyewitnesses to the shooting near Club Cabo, Wessing said, but they did describe two vehicles leaving the lot. One is described as a Green Honda Civic without a hood. The other is a beige, white, or gold Nissan Altima.

Shell casings were also found near the Subway parking lot. Wessing said the lot is used for overflow parking by the club patrons.

Police had not named any suspects Sunday afternoon.

Mesa police is requesting anyone with information contact them at (480) 644 2211.
