The Gilbert Unified School District is encouraging community members to offer suggestions that could possibly replace the controversial Campo Verde High School name.

The district has launched an online survey on the district Web site at www.gilbert.k12.az.us.

The survey will be available through 5 p.m. Tuesday, said district spokeswoman Dianne Bowers.

Gilbert board to reconsider high school name

Gilbert parents want high school's name changed

The name suggestions will be compiled and given to the school board, which is expected to discuss the high school name again at its Nov. 25 board meeting, Bowers said.

The school board decided last week to reconsider a name for the district’s fifth high school. The district received about 80 e-mails asking the board to choose another name.

Parents said they didn’t like the Campo Verde name because it didn’t fit in with the area, wasn’t attached to a district junior high name, and sounded too close to Camp Verde High. Parents also said they wanted to give input into the high school’s name.

The new high school is scheduled to open in the fall at Germann Road and Val Vista Drive.

Deb Carr, who has three children in the district, said she was the only parent in attendance at the Oct. 28 board meeting where the board decided on the Campo Verde name.

Carr saw the original high school name list and said she “still feels there were excellent choices from that list.” Some of the names were suggested by school board members, some by community members.

Discovery High, San Tan Vista High, Copper Point High and South Valley High were some of the suggestions, she said.

“I’m not sure what name I would choose,” said Carr, who will likely be in the boundaries for the new high school. “I would prefer it have a unique name and not copy a name of an existing school in the district.”
