The Diamondbacks have talked to St. Louis about a possible trade for second baseman Adam Kennedy, who has requested a change of scenery after losing his starting position with the Cardinals.
Kennedy is owed $4 million in 2009, however, and Cardinals’ general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the team does not want to pay a large portion of that salary in any deal.
Kennedy, 32, is among the many candidates to fill the second base vacancy that will be created when Orlando Hudson hits the market.
Free agent Mark Loretta also has drawn the D-Backs’ interest.
Kennedy, who hit .280 with two home runs and 36 RBIs for the Cardinals last season, would address the D-backs’ interest in getting another left-handed bat in the lineup.
Shortstop Stephen Drew is the only other left-handed hitting regular, although Chad Tracy figures to see a significant amount of time in 2009.
Kennedy, a career .276 hitter with 136 stolen bases, was a member of the Angels’ 2002 World Series championship team.
Kennedy likely would be a temporary solution, however, since he would be a free agent after next season unless the D-Backs were willing to offer a contract extension.
After five years in the Angels’ organization, Kennedy signed a three-year, $10 million free agent deal with Cardinals in the winter of 2006.
The Cardinals are said to have interest in Hudson as part of their attempt to retool the middle infield.
