D-Backs' Cruz, Eckstein file for free agency

Diamondbacks right-hander Juan Cruz and middle infielder David Eckstein filed for free agency Thursday, the first day players could enter the free-agent pool.

The D-Backs' five other potential free agents are Tony Clark, Adam Dunn, Orlando Hudson, Randy Johnson and Brandon Lyon.

Filing is a procedural move, and the D-Backs can continue to negotiate with all their players. They have sole negotiating rights on their free agents until Nov.13. Although the D-Backs are playing it close to the vest, Johnson and Lyon appear to be the most likely to return, although offers have not been discussed.

"I have had no substantive talks with anyone about my free agents," said agent Barry Meister, who represents both Johnson and Lyon.

The D-Backs appear to have about $12 million to spend this offseason but have only one hole, at second base, if Hudson leaves, as expected. They seem more likely to fill that by trade rather than through the free-agent market.

The D-Backs have talked about shifting third baseman Mark Reynolds to second base, a move that would enable them to consider trade candidates at third base and/or create time for Chad Tracy, one of their few left-handed bats.

Chris Burke also is a candidate to play second base.

EXTRA BASES: Catcher Robby Hammock is eligible for salary arbitration as a "super two" after accruing enough time in his parts of five seasons with the D-Backs. Major leaguers with three to six years of experience are eligible for arbitration, as well as the top 17 percent of players with two-plus years.
