During Arizona State’s preseason drills, Ryan Bass’ ball-security problems were so apparent that one message board kept a daily fumble count on him.

After he ran for 56 yards on 10 carries — albiet mostly in garbage time — against a good Oregon run defense on Saturday, Bass’ playing time is expected to increase. And ASU fans are hopeful that the highly-touted true freshman will provide a much-needed jolt to the team’s running game.
Indeed, Bass has come a long way.
“Every week, I’m feeling more confident,” said Bass, a Parade All-American at Centennial High School in Corona, Calif., where he rushed for 7,096 yards and 117 touchdowns.
“I’m more used to the pace of the game, and my ball security is getting better. The coaches have really helped me out with that. I’m a harder worker now.”
Bass’ playing time was limited in the first half of the season, as he got a grip on the ball and pass blocking, something that most freshman running backs struggle with.
Despite his fumble woes, Bass in August flashed potential, showing a speed burst and shiftiness that few — if any — other players on ASU’s roster have.
“He can make you miss because he has very good feet,” coach Dennis Erickson said. “He’s very stong in his lower body, which helps him break tackles. He’s put on about 15 pounds since he’s been here.”
Actually, Bass said, it is 20.
“I came in at 185 (pounds),” said Bass, who is 5-foot-10. “I’m above 200 now.”
Physically, Bass’ concern is a hamstring pull, suffered at Southern California on Oct. 11 and aggravated on Saturday. He expects to carry the ball this weekend at Oregon State, however.
“I proved myself last week,” Bass said. “I’m ready to play more.”
INJURY REPORT
Receiver Kyle Williams did not practice on Tuesday due to a concussion and is questionable this week. He is not the only wideout aching, as Michael Jones was limited due to a sore back, an ailment that is not new to him.
Jones has had back spasms in the past, but his most recent injury was a contusion suffered when he hit the turf hard during Saturday’s game against Oregon.
“I’m a little banged up,” Jones said. “Hopefully, it won’t keep me out more than a day or two.”
Center Thomas Altieri (stinger) practiced but reserve defensive end James Brooks (ankle) remains questionable.
