Boo at the Zoo: A different species of scare

Halloween is a little different at the Phoenix Zoo. Out there, elephants get the treats, and goats get their game on. It’s a great time to be a kid, and a bad time to be a pumpkin.
Boo at the Zoo, the Phoenix’s Zoo’s 19th annual take on Halloween, spins trick-or-treat through the animal kingdom, in a family-friendly way. Local team mascots put their enormous heads together for a festive outdoor parade. Tortoises, coatis and orangutans nosh on pumpkins and harvest treats. Sure-footed goats vie for bragging rights in agility contests, as kids bump and hop their way through mazes, hopscotch grids and obstacles courses.
Children are invited to come in costume over the weekend, and the zoo’s exhibits and play areas will answer with their spookiest holiday fare. Savannah Park blossoms into a photo-friendly pumpkin patch, and Radio Disney and storyteller/singer Mrs. B give the weekend a musical vibe.
But perhaps the most interesting moments will come from the staggered weekend feedings, where creatures from mountain lions to meerkats try to make heads, tails, shelter or supper out of their pumpkin treats.
The zoo will also offer presentations on their work to preserve endangered frogs. Regular attractions and features will remain open, with the exception of Monkey Island, which closes this weekend for the safety of the animals.
It may not be your traditional Halloween. But have you seen what an elephant can do to a pumpkin? Scary
