Would-be purse snatchers dragged a woman across a Wal-Mart parking lot in a vehicle Tuesday after she refused to let go of her bag, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office says.
The attempted theft led to the arrests of two people who were part of "criminal syndicate," a sheriff's report says.
The 42-year-old victim was loading her vehicle with purchases at 5:30 p.m. when a man attacked her at 1725 W. Hunt Highway, said sheriff's spokeswoman Vanessa White.
The man snatched the woman's purse and ran toward a waiting vehicle. As he jumped into the passenger seat, the victim was able to grab her purse through the open door. The driver pulled away, dragging the woman for 10 feet, the report says.
After viewing store security cameras and interviewing witnesses, police tracked down 18-year-old Manuel De Jesus Acosta in Coolidge. After questioning Acosta, driver Yesenia Marie Perez and passenger Emilio Lopez Jr., officers determined that the group, plus two other members in the vehicle, were part of a "criminal syndicate," the report states.
Acosta also admitted that two people in the group committed a Glendale robbery the same day and said the group commits robberies for gas and drug money, the report said.
Acosta faces charges of aggravated assault, robbery and involvement in a criminal syndicate, White said. Perez was charged with aggravated assault, endangerment and involvement in a criminal syndicate.
